Auditor General Tables Ottawa Police Service – Audit of Project Management
May 12, 2026
Ottawa – Today, Auditor General Nathalie Gougeon tabled the Audit of Project Management for the Ottawa Police Service (OPS or the Service) before the Ottawa Police Service Board’s Finance and Audit Committee.
The audit found that, while recent efforts demonstrate progress towards more formal and consistent project management practices, key gaps remain that limit full alignment with industry standards. Notably, the Service lacks a formal project intake process to systematically evaluate and prioritize potential strategic projects. In addition, projects have not consistently had formal, approved budgets at the outset of the project, creating risk to the quality, efficiency, and consistency of project delivery.
The Auditor General also noted that, although a formal reporting schedule is in place, information provided to oversight bodies was sometimes lacking sufficient detail and contained inaccurate information.
The audit provided 7 recommendations aimed at ensuring that OPS has appropriate project management policies and practices in place in order to execute projects in the achievement of its Strategic Plan. All recommendations were accepted by the Service.
